ChatGPT Business and Enterprise limits: the only official numbers

Business is the one ChatGPT plan where OpenAI publishes message estimates. Standard seats get a five-hour allowance per model, Premium seats get five times that with no five-hour window, and workspace credits let usage continue past either. Enterprise runs the same machinery under contract terms.

Reviewed: . Figures marked official come from OpenAI’s help center; everything else is labelled as observed or approximate.

Important: OpenAI changes plan rules, model names and allowances without notice. The message and reset time inside ChatGPT is the only number that is definitely yours.

The numbers

OpenAI’s published local-message estimates.

From the ChatGPT Business models and limits help article. OpenAI notes that “actual usage varies by model and task; cloud chats can use more of an allowance than local messages”.

ModelStandard seat, per 5 hoursPremium seat
GPT-5.6 Sol10–100 messages5x Standard, no 5-hour limit
GPT-5.6 Terra25–200 messages5x Standard, no 5-hour limit
GPT-5.6 Luna250–2,000 messages5x Standard, no 5-hour limit

The range reflects reasoning effort and task size: a short Instant question sits at the top of the range, a long High-reasoning analysis at the bottom.

How workspaces differ

What changes when limits are per seat.

Credits continue usage

When a seat reaches its allowance, eligible usage can continue on purchased workspace credits if the admin enabled them and spending controls allow.

Admins shape the limit

Model access, tools, connectors, uploads and Codex can be restricted by the organisation, independent of OpenAI’s allowances.

Files

40 files per project, 512 MB per file, 2 million tokens per document, 80 uploads per three hours, 100 GB per organisation.

Codex

Included and token-metered under the Codex rate card; it draws on the same credits.

Choosing seats

Alternatives

What teams use when a workspace is capped.

Workspace policies usually decide this. Where they allow it, these tools cover the gap; none are affiliated with OpenAI.

FAQ

Business and Enterprise limit questions answered.

What are the ChatGPT Business message limits?

OpenAI publishes them as five-hour local-message estimates for Standard seats: GPT-5.6 Sol 10–100, Terra 25–200, Luna 250–2,000. Premium seats get 5x the Standard allowance with no five-hour limit.

What happens when a seat hits its allowance?

Eligible usage can continue with purchased workspace credits if the admin has enabled them and spending controls allow; otherwise wait for the reset or use another available option.

Are Enterprise limits the same?

Enterprise is contract-based. Premium seats and credits work on the same model, but allowances and controls are negotiated and set by the workspace admin.

Why does my colleague have a different limit?

Seat type (Standard vs Premium), admin restrictions on models or tools, and whether the workspace has credits enabled all change what each person sees.

Do Business seats include Codex?

Yes; Codex usage is token-metered and can draw on workspace credits under OpenAI’s rate card.

How many files per project on Business?

40 files per project, plus the standard caps: 512 MB per file, 2 million tokens per document, 80 uploads per three hours, 100 GB per organisation.
