Unlimited everyday text
OpenAI’s help center: Free and Go get “unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards”. Drafting, rewriting, questions and coding help in plain chat do not count against anything.
Reviewed guide · September 1, 2026
Free is no longer a message-counting plan. Since OpenAI’s August 2026 change, Free users chat without a cap on GPT-5.6 Luna. What still stops you is reasoning, images, uploads, voice and deep research — each with its own allowance and reset.

Straight answer
OpenAI’s help center: Free and Go get “unlimited everyday text chats, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards”. Drafting, rewriting, questions and coding help in plain chat do not count against anything.
Free has the Think option (extended reasoning on Luna) with a limit. The Medium, High, Extra High and Pro reasoning options are Plus and Pro features.
The tightest official Free cap. Per-file limits also apply: 512 MB, 2 million tokens for documents, about 50 MB for spreadsheets, 20 MB per image.
Each has its own daily-style or monthly allowance that OpenAI does not publish as a fixed number. The in-app message shows the reset.
Free vs Go vs Plus
| Free | Go | Plus | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | $0 | $8/mo (select countries) | $20/mo |
| Text chat | Unlimited, Luna | Unlimited, Luna | Unlimited, Sol |
| Reasoning | Think (limited) | Think (limited) | Instant, Medium, High |
| File uploads | 3 per day | Higher allowance | Higher; 20 files per project |
| Images | Capped | Higher allowance | Higher allowance |
| Deep research | Limited tasks | Limited tasks | Monthly allowance |
| Codex | — | — | Included, token-metered |
Go is the fix for image and upload caps; Plus is the fix for reasoning and Codex.

Three uploads a day is the cap you will feel first. Pasted text is unlimited.
Outline, draft and rewrite on the default model. Save the Think option for one hard question.
Size, style, subject, text to include. Iterating burns the image allowance fastest.
Ask section by section instead of pasting a 200-page report at once; the model handles it better anyway.
When a feature cap appears, the message shows when it clears. Plan around it.
Alternatives
If a cap lands mid-task and you cannot wait for the reset, the practical fix is a second tool. None of these are affiliated with OpenAI; pick whichever fits the job.
Strong writing, analysis and long documents. Has its own five-hour and weekly limits.

AlternativeUseful inside Microsoft 365 and Windows.
Multi-modelSeveral models in one workspace so one provider’s cap does not end your day.

FAQ
Since August 2026, everyday text chat on the Free plan is unlimited on GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards. There is no daily message count to track.
Free still caps the Think reasoning option, image generation, file uploads (three per day, official), voice and deep research. The message names the feature and shows a reset time.
GPT-5.6 Luna for text. The Think option is available but limited; Sol and Sol Pro reasoning are paid-tier features.
Go ($8/month where offered) keeps unlimited text on Luna and gives higher allowances on images and uploads, plus more memory. If you hit image or upload caps daily, it is the cheapest fix; if you need Medium or High reasoning, you need Plus.
Yes, three per day (OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ). Hard limits still apply: 512 MB per file, 2 million tokens for text files, about 50 MB for spreadsheets, 20 MB per image.
It violates OpenAI’s usage policies and risks both accounts. The limits that remain on Free are per feature and reset on their own; a second account is not worth it.
