ChatGPT Plus limits: where a $20 plan still stops
Plus removed the message counter long ago and text chat is unlimited. What Plus meters is reasoning effort, images, uploads, voice, deep research and Codex. This page lists each cap, official where OpenAI publishes one, and how to work inside them.

Official: 20 files per project, 80 uploads per rolling three hours, 512 MB per file, 2 million tokens per document, ~50 MB per spreadsheet, 20 MB per image, 25 GB storage.
Images and voice
Higher allowances than Free, not published as numbers. The in-app message names the feature and the reset.
Deep research and Codex
Deep research has a monthly allowance that resets 30 days after first use. Codex is included and metered by tokens under OpenAI’s rate card.

Attach files once to a project instead of re-uploading them into every chat.

Fully specify the image before generating.

It is exact; retrying before it only wastes attempts.

Does ChatGPT Plus have a message limit?
Not on plain text chat. Plus limits apply to the Medium and High reasoning options on GPT-5.6 Sol, to images, uploads, voice and deep research, and to Codex usage.
What happens when I hit the Plus reasoning limit?
OpenAI’s help center says ChatGPT “may continue with another available reasoning model”. Your chat keeps going on a lower reasoning setting until the displayed reset time.
How many reasoning messages does Plus get?
OpenAI does not publish a consumer figure. Its only official per-window numbers are for Business Standard seats (Sol 10–100 per five hours), which Plus is broadly comparable to; treat that as a ballpark, not a promise.
How many files can I upload on Plus?
Up to 20 files per project and up to 80 files every three hours across the account (OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ), with the usual per-file caps of 512 MB, 2 million tokens, ~50 MB for spreadsheets and 20 MB per image.
Is Pro worth it over Plus?
Only if you hit the High reasoning cap or Codex limits most days, or need Sol Pro. Pro at $100 gives 5x Plus usage; $200 gives 20x.
Can Support raise my Plus limit?
No. OpenAI states that Support does not reset ChatGPT or Codex usage limits.
