ChatGPT file upload limits: every official number

File uploads are one of the few ChatGPT limits OpenAI publishes exactly. This page lists them all from the official file uploads FAQ, explains which one usually causes a failed upload, and shows how to work around each without breaking anything.

Reviewed: . Figures marked official come from OpenAI’s help center; everything else is labelled as observed or approximate.

Important: OpenAI changes plan rules, model names and allowances without notice. The message and reset time inside ChatGPT is the only number that is definitely yours.

Work smarter

Fewer uploads, better answers.

01

Projects, not re-uploads

Attach reference files once; every chat in the project can use them.

02

Paste the relevant part

For a question about one section, paste it. Unlimited text beats a capped upload.

03

Trim spreadsheets

Filter to the columns and rows that matter before uploading.

04

Name what you want

“Summarise sections 3–5 and list every date” gets a better answer than “analyse this” and needs fewer follow-ups.

Alternatives

What to use when uploads are capped.

If a cap lands mid-task and you cannot wait for the reset, the practical fix is a second tool. None of these are affiliated with OpenAI; pick whichever fits the job.

FAQ

File upload limit questions answered.

What is the ChatGPT file upload size limit?

512 MB per file, hard limit on every plan. Text and document files are also capped at 2 million tokens, spreadsheets at about 50 MB, and images at 20 MB (OpenAI’s file uploads FAQ).

How many files can I upload?

Up to 80 files every three hours on all plans. Free accounts are limited to three uploads per day. Projects hold 20 files on Plus and 40 on Pro, Business and Education; a custom GPT holds 10 files for its lifetime.

Is there a storage limit?

25 GB per user and 100 GB per organisation.

How long are uploaded files kept?

Files are deleted within 30 days after you delete the chat, custom GPT or account, with exceptions for security or legal reasons. Advanced Data Analysis retention varies by plan.

Why did a small file fail?

Usually the token cap (a long text file can exceed 2 million tokens well under 512 MB), the spreadsheet cap, a Free daily cap, or the three-hour rolling cap. Split the file or paste the relevant part.

Do uploads use my message limit?

Text chat is unlimited, so no. Uploads have their own caps listed here, and analysing a file with extended reasoning uses the reasoning allowance.
